Volare, the Marcopolo brand that specializes in mini and midibuses, announced the arrival on the market of a new version of its Fly10, specially conceived for rental services for business transport, excursions, tourism and occasional trips on short routes.

The Fly10 is the Volare model with the highest capacity and with this new version, the number of seats increases, being able to transport up to 38 passengers thanks to its 10,145 mm in length. With this vehicle, operating costs can be reduced by up to 35%, compared to larger buses and passenger space, due to lower fuel consumption. Additionally, the initial purchase price is up to 20% less, which allows carriers to have a very favorable Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

The seats, one of the main hallmarks of the interior, are the 1060 Soft Executive model, with a width typical of the large buses of the brand. It also offers as options, the accessibility device, by means of a mobile armchair (DPM) or with a ramp to allow people with reduced mobility to easily board the bus. Greater space helps to have better circulation inside the Fly10, with a vinyl floor that imitates wood and gives it an air of elegance.

The economy and simplicity of operation are also favored thanks to the Cummins ISF 3.8 engine with 162HP of power. A very interesting detail for operators who wish to provide maximum ride comfort on the road, will be the possibility of equipping the Fly10 with air suspension. The Volvo 7900 electric bus arrived in Mexico in 2021 to be much more than a test vehicle, for the country’s urban transport operators to evaluate it and obtain key information to make their transport electrification projects viable. Since it arrived, it has been discussed, manufacturing possibilities at the company’s plant in Tultitlán, considering that the current model that travels the country on demonstration routes has European origin, built in Poland, at the Grudziadz plant.

But it is also necessary to have bodies of local development that allow, in addition to boosting the development of the Mexican bus industry, offer versions at more competitive prices and have better weapons to face the Chinese brands that have been arriving in the country with their integral units.

That is why the Swedish manufacturer is looking for bodies that are coupled to the 7900 electric platforms, which could accompany the original Volvo. This experience is not new, since at the time the articulated 7300 had both integral versions (chassis and bodywork), in addition to options in charge of both AYCO and Marcopolo.

Rafael Kisel, general manager of Volvo Buses México, has said several times that they are looking for the equation that best responds to the needs of the Mexican market, and if in foreign buses a large part of their success has been working closely with body manufacturers Mexicans, in electric buses would be a formula to find more competitive prices.

In June 2021, plans were made known by the German FlixBus to disembark in Brazil before the end of the year. The company, famous for bringing down the prices of bus tickets in Europe and becoming an option for those who want to travel the old continent at a low cost compared to the plane and especially the train, expects to invest 650 million dollars for its operation in the South American giant.

FlixBus was created to capitalize on the opening of the transport sector in Germany in 2013, it adopted a model very similar to that of Uber, without the need to have its own fleet of vehicles, reducing the price of tickets. It was making acquisitions in Europe and is currently one of the main companies in the transport sector in the old continent, it is also present in the United States. It currently connects more than 2,000 cities in 30 countries.

FlixBus Brasil is ready to start operating in the country, pending the launch of regulatory bodies, such as the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT). «Brazil is one of the largest markets in the world, and we are only waiting for licenses, since we operate regularly in all parts of the world,» says Edson Lopes, General Director of FlixBus in the country.

The data allow estimating that the Brazilian travel market in the road segment is close to 50 million operations per year. In 2020, due to the pandemic, the figure fell by 54%, but this year there is already a recovery. Lopes calculates that also with intercity trips (suburban), the market is 80 million trips a year.

The executive also believes it is possible for FlixBus to become the market leader and quickly reach a market share of more than 10 million passengers. For this number to be possible, it would not be unusual for the company to start operations with aggressive promotions, as is often the case in other markets in which it debuted. The company recently debuted in the UK with trips for less than 1 Euro.

Like Uber when it began operating in Brazil, the company moved in a regulated market and several companies in the sector rejected the entry of a competitor who did not even own a bus and, according to them, did not comply with the standards established by ANTT. The Brazilian Association of Passenger Land Transport Companies (Abrati), for example, presented actions to block Buser’s operation, but withdrew them in April 2021.

In June, Buser received investments of 700 million reais and stated that he wanted to multiply by ten in two years with more than 1 billion reais (about USD 190 million) in investments. FlixBus will enter a market that is already more used to this type of service and additionally, it comes with a lot of money behind it: 100 million dollars that will be invested initially, will come from a contribution of 650 million previously received. In addition to cheaper trips, the company will bet on a premium segment, with more comfortable buses and the possibility of offering more trips in buses with bed and semi-bed accommodation. To do this, the company has been developing alliances with car manufacturers and financial entities to be able to leverage the purchase of vehicles from those interested.

With more than 80 years of history, the Estrella Blanca group is one of the main bus companies in Mexico and with more than 15 famous brands in the country’s transport such as Transportes Chihuahuenses since the 1940s, Futura in the 1990s, or Select in the 21st century. Its routes cover more than 25 states of the Aztec nation.

Preparing for the economic recovery and betting on the return of travelers to road or foreign buses as they are called in Mexico, the group has finalized an order for more than 200 buses to renew its fleet. The group has again bet on Irizar and its top-of-the-range model the i8, surprising because the bodies will be mounted on two chassis brands, with Euro 6 engines.

After an exhaustive analysis, the Estrella Blanca Group chose the Volvo B13R and the Scania K500 which will be a novelty on the road for their ability to meet Euro 6 emission standards, which, although they will be a little more expensive than the current Euro 5, they generate lower consumption and emissions, allowing to offset the increase in the initial purchase price. The eBus Radar platform is one of the organizations that promotes and monitors electromobility applied to public transport in Latin America, in charge of three functions: quantifying the CO2 emissions that electric buses have avoided, promoting data transparency and permanently monitoring the fleets of buses with this technology that operate in the region.

Monthly it publishes the statistics of the cities, the brands and the number of electric buses that are operating. It does not include the units that are awarded in different projects and that have already been ordered from the manufacturers, nor does it include those that were built but have not yet been registered. It is also important to clarify that road models are not recorded, which allows brands such as KingLong (the strongest in the region) or Sunwin, to add to the records.

In the accumulated brands that EBus Radar has been following since 2017 and taking data as of July 2021, BYD has 1,114 units sold and operating throughout the continent. An amount that has grown dramatically, especially since 2019 with the fleet electrification projects in the Red de Santiago de Chile, Transmilenio in Bogotá and Metroplus de Medellín system.

It is also a reflection of the work in many countries of several years of the Shenzhen builder, who in some of them spent several years in demonstrations, putting his products to the test in several of the most demanding urban systems in the region and betting without even making a sale a single bus, as electromobility is more grounded and the product has been better adapted to Latin America, orders are on the rise and deliveries planned for Transmilenio in the remainder of 2021 and 2022 will eventually trigger BYD’s advantage over other manufacturers of electric buses.

The southern country also stands out for being the one with the greatest plurality of brands since, in addition to BYD as the leader, Foton, Yutong and Kinglong participate. Yutong leads in Mexico thanks to the incorporation of trolleybuses for the country’s capital, where it is also fighting for an important order on the Metrobús routes.

In Brazil, for the moment Eletra is leading the way, thanks to the incorporation of super articulated trolley chassis and 15-meter patterns that roll through São Paulo, coupled to the Millennium model bodies of the manufacturer Caio, although BYD is preparing to cut background quickly.

To facilitate and encourage the incorporation of zero-emission vehicles into Integrated Public Transport Systems, which are also modern and accessible to ensure inclusive mobility for the inhabitants of Lima and Callao, the Urban Transport Authority (ATU) published the Bus Standard Electrical Pattern.

Based on Directorial Resolution 02/2021, which was part of a project that was submitted for discussion, to standardize the characteristics of dimensions, capacities, weights and motor skills, the managing body of transportation in the Peruvian capital published the Directorial Resolution N° 0011-2021-ATU / DIR to be followed by public transport companies wishing to incorporate electric buses and, of course, manufacturers.

The electric buses that are incorporated for transportation in the Lima and Callao area, may have lengths of 9 and 12 meters long for single-body vehicles (midibus and standard), in addition to the articulated and bi-articulated buses that may offer 18 and 27 meters long, respectively. The capacity will start with the 40 passengers of the 9-meter midibus and will reach up to 250 of the double-articulated bus. Likewise, its battery packs must allow a range of at least 200 kilometers.

The permitted vehicle weights will start at the maximum 18,000Kg allowed for the 9-meter bus, up to 42,000Kg for the bi-articulated bus. The angles of attack, the heights from the floor to the passenger lounge, running boards, location of emergency exits are also considered. The units also have defined equipment and locations to facilitate access for people with reduced mobility (ramps, wheelchair lifts, preferential seats and for those traveling with live aid, etc.)

An important section is the renewal of the air inside the vehicles, having to be equipped with forced mechanical ventilation systems that allow fresh air to be delivered and to expel the stale at least 30 times per hour. Fans, inductors and extractors must consider a continuous work day of 14 hours. The master buses will also have an air conditioning system, as well as a biosafety system (which includes temperature gauges when entering the bus) and video surveillance cameras (to view the interior and exterior of the unit).

Speakers and signs will also be included for the transmission of variable information to the users of the service, acoustic alerts, racks for the transfer of bicycles in the front of the vehicle, among other features that will optimize the experience and improve the quality of the service in favor of the Username.

VALPARAISO ANNOUNCED A BID TO INCORPORATE 35 ELECTRIC BUSES

The Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications of Chile (MTT), led by Gloria Hutt, announced yesterday a public tender that will seek to incorporate 35 electric buses, under the standard of the massive Red system of the capital Santiago, seeking to offer two routes that will benefit more of 14,000 people.

The head of the Transport and Telecommunications portfolio, announced that a strategy is being promoted throughout the country, which intends that by 2040, public transport is 100% electric by 2040 to achieve greater energy efficiency, mitigate gases from greenhouse effect and improve the quality of life of users.

It is expected to build a «green» corridor or electric corridor, with a length of close to 24 kilometers, with 35 electric buses that will have about 150 departures on business days. The vehicles will be of the midibus type with lengths between 8.5 and 10.5 meters long with a low floor, USB ports, Wi-Fi, air conditioning and suitable to allow inclusive transport.

The tender for this new service will have an estimated duration of three months between the publication of offers and the signing of the contract. FAIRGROUND WILL ALLOW PRESERVING BIOSECURITY

A pleasant surprise and a sign of both the confidence in the Latin American bus industry, and its chances of recovery, has been the confirmation of a Busworld appointment, which will take place in Argentina from September 21 to 23, 2022, taking the witness of the two celebrations held in Colombia during 2016 and 2017.

This appointment in Buenos Aires will be much more than the Latin busworld stop, as it will be held at a time that is expected, reaffirms the signs of economic recovery and brings together the protagonists of the bus in an unforgettable reunion. Busworld International, Messe Frankfurt and Messe Frankfurt Argentina as organizers and accompanied by i2 Productora and El Expreso TV, one of the most important bus media on the continent, supporting the commercialization of the event.

Daniel Orciani, engineer and producer at the helm of El Expreso TV, has worked hard to have Busworld in Argentina and is now taking on a new challenge to ensure the success of the Latin show. We talked with him about the negotiations carried out, the size of the sample and how he sees the bus industry in the region.

WILLIAM MARROQUÍN – COLOMBIABUS: Since when did the interest in Argentina host Busworld LatinAmerica arise, and how far had the negotiations advanced when the pandemic was decreed?

DANIEL ORCIANI – EL EXPRESO TV: I was gestating interest in various visits to Busworld fairs around the world. During Didier Ramoudt’s tenure, I started collecting data and presenting Argentine transport businessmen; culminating with a visit by Didier to our country, where with the people of Messe Frankfurt Argentina we explained the possibilities that we offered, and we toured the City and the La Rural fairgrounds a little. Later we resumed the conversations with Vincent Dewaele in a virtual way, and the contractual negotiations were carried out between Messe Frankfurt Germany, Messe Argentina and Busworld International.

CB: Did the pandemic force you to suspend and start from scratch?

DO: The pandemic did not affect these negotiations due to the stage they were in.

CB: Was La Ferial Rural always the venue chosen to host Busworld LatinAmerica or was it one of the changes after the pandemic?

DO: We always think of La Rural since it is the largest place for events and exhibitions in all of Latin America and in our country it is very recognized, since it is located in the heart of Palermo neighborhood and houses the traditional exhibition of Livestock, Agriculture and Internationally recognized industry that attracts visitors from all over the world.

CB: One of the neuralgic points is the renewal of the air inside the venues. Are there modifications in the facilities of La Ferial Rural aimed at an adequate management of ventilation? What changes are planned in the management of the stands and conferences in order to offer the best biosafety conditions to the audience? Will there be a greater number of pavilions with outdoor display, compared to other Busworld fairs?

DO: Throughout the world, it is estimated that by the date of Busworld Latin America the protocols will be very similar to those of the prepandemic. Regardless of this, the ventilation systems and the size of the facilities, with large openings, guarantee good sanitary control.

CB: How much space will La Ferial Rural have to host Busworld LatinAmérica, how many exhibitors can be there?

DO: In principle we will have 9,000 m2. The number of exhibitors will depend on the size of the stands… And we expect very large stands !! With automotive terminals and body shops throughout the region.

CB: The Latin automotive industry has been recovering, but the passenger transport segments have different results: charter is growing, the road may return to normal in 2023 and the urban one depends on the projects of the cities, we also see occasionally in Argentina very high interest rates to finance the purchase of productive vehicles and in cases like Colombia a significant devaluation making products more expensive. How do these events motivate the industry in such a complex scenario?

DO: All markets in the world were affected by the pandemic… And especially the transport of people. It was not an isolated phenomenon. Depending on the degree of aid or state dependency, many were able to survive and others remained or will remain on the road. Transportation needs will continue to exist, and financing is already adapting to new realities. From the point of view of the consumer or the State, one can think of an aging of the vehicle fleet and from the point of view of the employer, not renewing leads to a decapitalization of their business. And not anticipating or not knowing new trends or technologies, today, represents a great risk for any business. That is why we notice a great interest and desire to participate in an exhibition like this face-to-face, and of regional and international scope.

CB: Daniel has been a Union Director and knows very well that the support of the unions (Federations) is important for the success of events of this magnitude. Who have confirmed their support, and will they be as allies at the event?

DO: We still do not formally send invitations except to the Minister of Transport, who will surely be present at the launch this year and at the opening of the fair in 2022. But informally I have already been speaking, and I can assure you that all associations and transport chambers, both urban and long-distance buses will be sponsors of the show, will have their place and will actively participate.

CB: How did Messe Frankfurt and its Argentine subsidiary react to the cancellation of in-person B2B events around the world, and how do they maintain faith in holding Busworld in Buenos Aires?

DO: The people at Messe Frankfurt Argentina (and in charge of Latin America) are very professional and organize many fairs and exhibitions for quite some time. It does not depend only on a good fair to continue in the business, of course, like everyone else, the pandemic affected and paralyzed the business. In my opinion, digital events did not compensate for the absence of face-to-face, so holding an International Fair like Busworld represents a great opportunity to add to your portfolio once face-to-face events begin.

CB: What does this challenge of marketing Busworld Latin America represent for I2 Productora and El Expreso TV in a scenario of reactivation?

DO: For i2 Productora, more than a challenge, it means a great business opportunity and in some way a recognition of our trajectory. We are confident that we can contribute our knowledge of more than 20 years of this market so that Busworld LatinAmerica is a success and is installed as one of the best Busworld in the world.

CB: When could we see signs of economic recovery in the bus industry in both Argentina and Latin America?

DO: There was an initial communication from many governments, officials, press and communicators that the buses were dangerous and a place of possible contagion. This was a severe blow to the bus industry, although several studies have shown that bubbles and protocols make traveling by bus very safe. Recovery will be very fast in those places where this initial misconception is reversed and also where more population is vaccinated. People WANT and need to travel. We were locked up and isolated for a long time. And I believe that as soon as the conditions are met, he will do it again with a redoubled spirit. Entrepreneurs must also prepare by offering products that attract doubters such as Sanitation systems, such as UV, or ozone or air circulation. They must publicize it and governments approve and even require them. In Argentina, it is going that way and I hope that in all of Latin America it will also be like that.

SCANIA LAUNCHES ITS FINANCIAL SERVICES DIVISION IN ARGENTINA

Understanding what your clients’ business is like and being able to offer financial services tailored to their needs is a huge differential for manufacturers of productive vehicles such as buses, compared to their competitors and naturally compared to traditional banks. Having risk profiles grounded with the reality of the operation and its timing, agile credit studies, flexibility in terms, better interest rates, payment channels and other aspects can make a carrier choose in favor of a brand that offer all these solutions.

In Scania they understand this very well and that is why in recent years, it has been seen how in the main markets of Latin America, the Swedish manufacturer has established its financial services subsidiaries. An initiative that was born more than sixty years ago in Sweden, to support its clients’ projects and provide better access to credit, leasing, renting and insurance options, allowing you to acquire the chassis, bodies, engines and even some accessories such as air conditioning equipment.

VOLKSWAGEN RETURNS TO Bogotá’S TRANSMILENIO WITH THE FIRST VOLKSBUS EURO VI

THE SYSTEM NOW HAS 239 BUSES

Gran Américas Usme, concessionaire of the zonal component of the Transmilenio system, strengthens its fleet and becomes the first operator of mass transportation systems in Colombia to include Volkswagen Euro VI buses in its fleet. There are 28 new Volksbus 11,180 buses with the capacity to transport up to 50 passengers, with high-efficiency, low-consumption and emission diesel engines that meet the Euro VI emissions standard.

With the incorporation of these 28 new buses, Gran Américas Usme completes a fleet of 239 latest model vehicles, adding to the 211 standards it received in January 2021. The buses that are added will be key to serving routes in areas of slopes and narrow streets.

The big news is naturally the return of Volkswagen, which since 2006 has not been present in the Transmilenio system. At that time the Volksbus 17,190 and 17,230 bodied in Pereira with the legendary Busscar Urbanuss Pluss, were serving routes in the feeder service both in the North Portal and in Portal Suba, even in service until March 2021.

Another noteworthy fact is the MAN 4.8-liter displacement 4-cylinder diesel engine that complies with the Euro VI standard, delivers 180HP at 2,400 revolutions and 600Nm of torque between 1,100 and 1,850 revolutions. The transmission is a 6-speed manual provided by Eaton, ZF clutch and DANA axles, while the air brakes provided by Knorr-Bremse feature ABS + EBD.

The buses were bodied in Pereira by Busscar de Colombia, with its Optimuss model for midibus, which reinforces its alliance with Gran Américas Usme, whose 211 standards powered by natural gas also use the famous Urbanuss Pluss model. They can transport 22 seated and 28 standing passengers, with handrails and bells within reach of all occupants, an elevator for people with reduced mobility, space for wheelchairs and a preferred chair for those who need live help.

To provide comfort and help a positive travel experience through the local routes, Busscar counted on MET Group specialists who equipped the bus with technology and connectivity systems: USB ports for recharging electronic devices, Wi-Fi internet, router LED indicator to inform points of the route and cameras arranged throughout the interior.

Also, to give passengers peace of mind, the buses have recording of both the driver’s maneuvers and what happens in the passenger area and as a safety addition, the fatigue detector that alerts fleet managers about the condition who operates the vehicle.

With the entry of this fleet in the town of Usme, a total of 1,633 new buses have been linked through TransMilenio concessionaires as part of the renovation of the zonal component of the System, including the first 483 of 1,485 electric buses hired by Transmilenio.
